I was wondering how many bentos most people have. As I'm shopping around, I could see how it would be easy to accumulate a bunch of them.

Do you stick to just one or do you have a couple, or even a collection?

My 1 yr old daughter has two, my five yr old son has four, and I have one large, picnic size one. I am always looking to buy more though!
frykitty 16 years ago
I think I have about a dozen. Someday I'll remember to snap a picture and post it.
nicoteena 16 years ago
I forgot to ask for pictures! I would love to see people's collections.

I only have a Mr. Bento right now and it's too big to bring to work. I have my eye on quite a few smaller ones on eBay, but as mentioned in an earlier thread, it's difficult to find ones that are microwave safe.

Holy moly. I think I have 20, if you include my more tupperware-like ones. egads. Pictures here.

20 boxes?

I'm so glad to hear this. I only started making bento about eight weeks ago and I just bought my third box! And somehow I managed to convince my step-grandson that he wants one for Christmas. I thought I was beyond control!
Celladoor Posted 15 years ago. Edited by Celladoor (member) 15 years ago
Close to 20 (varies in size)

I have variety I use. Not just one I stick to. I use what is best for what food I am carrying.

I typically make atleast 2 bentos when I do do it. Sometimes, I am just too pressed for time.

I go for look and function. I don't want a drab bento but I will sacrifice looks over function.

I have a traditional 3 Tier Bento and the rest are plastic. Although, I have another traditional set coming. :)

I itch to buy bento. :)

UGH! My ebay bid got sniped. SHOOT! Such a cute bento! GRRRR!
Collectonian 15 years ago
I technically have two. I bought a set, but didn't realize the lids weren't microwaveable, so had to replace it (but got the same set). It is a traditional two-tier set, blue with a dragon fly design. I have the box, bag, chopsticks, etc, though they are actually from two similar looking sets versus all from the same company. Pictures of it, accessories, (and of course my packed foods) are available here

hm..I think I've got 5.
1 Hello Kitty
1 "traditional" one
1 cheap flat one xD
1 technically "normal" lunchbox
1 normal one...but it was to lids, a big one and a smaller one. ^_^ but it's HUGE Ôo°

I like the traditional one best....>.<

3 so far - a plain black one, a bigger green cat one, and a tiffin, which is on its way.

3 doesn't sound like much till you consider that I work from home and don't need to take a box lunch anywhere in the first place. Heh.

I know, but there are days at home when the added elegance of a bento would give you a badly needed lift.

Sometimes, on weekends, I find myself bentoizing a meal and putting it on a plate...

Say, atomic_rose, you and I have the same green bento. That was the first one I bought.
atomic rose 15 years ago
I saw that in your pictures, but I didn't want to be too much of a weirdo, commenting, "Whee! We have the same bento! OMG!" - heh.

I decided to start bentoing for portion control... I think I'm going to start eating my dinner out of a box too. At the very least, it'll justify that I keep buying boxes! :)

Dinner in a box, ok - but at home? That is weird. Wait, you're eating lunch at home, too...never mind.

Me, I'm tempted to tuck a bento into my purse to use as a doggie bag at restaurants - to make sure I get my share of deliciousness for lunch the next day...

No, wait. That is publicly weird! I don't think I could get away with it.
Collectonian 15 years ago
LOL, go for it! Who cares what other people think? Sometimes people look at me strange when I pull out my chopsticks at Asian restaurants. I keep a set in my purse in a pretty purple cover that a friend made for me. I don't care what they think, though, I just want good chopsticks to use when I eat. :-)

I find Chopsticks help me take my time. I always feel pressed for time, but I think it best not to rush my meal that way I don't binge.

I will find any excuse to use them. I keep a set in my purse too. hehe
Collectonian 15 years ago
Agreed! They help me eat slower so I don't over eat. If I go out to eat, I also like to immediately take half the food and put it in a to go box. to help me maintain control. :-)

This is slightly off-topic, but:

one more bento fan, Tupperware Flat-Outs are perfect for taking home restaurant leftovers. They store flat, so they fit in your purse easily, but they expand to whatever volume you need. I've pulled them out at restaurants before with no problems and no hassles. In fact, most people think it's cool (because it is). Never be afraid to do what you can to keep our planet healthy. :o)

i have three, and decided to keep it at that. because it's endless, there's always so much new stuff that you ABSOLUTELY have to have.... but where i live, no way to find boxes or accessories, the only way is the Net and the costs of shipping is making this quite an expensive little hobby...
OMBF / Obiwan Bento Posted 15 years ago. Edited by OMBF / Obiwan Bento (member) 15 years ago
Yeah, me too. I was gonna buy a cute little mini-box to augment the undersized but way cool Hakoya bento I just got. Instead of going nuts at JBox or eBay, I disciplined myself real hard and went to the drugstore and bought a nice little rubbermaid thing for three bux.

I am gonna have to do something else about dividers for that box, though ::scowl:: I disapprove of disposable food-accessories, so no sushi grass or plastic maple leaves. I intend to make do with pieces of decorative greens. Kale may not be exactly edible, but it sure is pretty.

My bento-box jones is pretty much asleep right now :) so I figure I'm safe until my next birthday (February). I asked for an eBay certificate for Christmas...

drv, thanks for the tip on Flat-Outs. I'll look into that. My daughter's looking over my shoulder :👋: and just told me about a rumor that a local town has outlawed styrofoam to-go boxes. So maybe I'll be tucking an empty bento into my purse after all. Now I need a new purse ... No! No I don't!!

I must have that goldfish bento, it's beautiful. I didn't see it on eBay. Share, please? :)

KateFord, I got it from tokyosamurai, an eBay seller - his/her prices are kinda high and the shipping is murder - but the selection is choice.

Warning: It's kinda small, and the bottom tray doesn't have a seal; it's closed by direct contact with the bottom of the upper tray. Definitely leak-prone. The upper tray has the typical bento kind-of-seal lid.

I can't find it anywhere right now, either. Keep surfing and be patient; I'm sure it will surface again.

This may sound wierd because since I am into recycling, I wash my dividers since they are plastic not paper and I wash my the mini wax-coated food cups. Since I found out about the silicone cupcake cups and the silicone measuring bowls, I am going to get them sometime in the near future.
Collectonian 15 years ago
Not weird at all. Makes good sense to me. I want to get some of the silicone ones as well so I can stop using disposables.

Hi,
I'm actually completely new to collecting bento boxes, but i've been wanting to start collecting for quite some time.
I think this is going to be my first, but i'm also looking at this one (although i'm afraid it would be too small) and this one! Sorry for using so many links, but I find too many that I like and wind up not being able to choose = P. I also plan to buy a Mr. Bento for more regular use = )
KJF916 15 years ago
Thanks, guys. I contacted this seller (I've bought stuff before) and he said he'd upload and sell some more gold fish bento boxes for us, so let's watch for them. Let's be careful though and not run up one another's bids -- he definately can get more, so let's be kind to our purses! :)

I wash my plastic grass, too. I have a few sheets that came with some other stuff I ordered.

Greetings, .sweet.pea.! I love the Monokuro Boo bento. Somber colors, severe design, and yet - two cute little piggies. Piggies taking life very seriously.

I just saw it on eBay, but I'm not prepared to spend another $25.00 right now (you gotta include shipping)!

It's not at the San-X website as far as I can tell. I wonder if it's a knockoff!

I wouldn't mind having a Lovery Fish bento, either.

I'm new here, and just started collecting bentos in Oct. So now I'm limiting myself to the less common ones, (and less expensive!) I'm trying to get down to less than 15$ including shipping. The last few have been about 12$ with shipping. I mean, they are after all glorified plastic boxes. I find that the ones that are listed with the word "bento" tend to cost just a little more. Although there's a red sakura one I've been eyeing that would be almost 40 something with shipping. I've been putting food in some of them, but haven't been taking pictures yet. I have a 2 year old, she always loves the little box and the food inside. Seems to make her eat the stuff inside more.

I don't have too many bentos (I tend to just use plastic containers), but I am trying to amass an accessory collection. Just came across
this cutlery set
and was wondering if anyone had actually seen or used them before?

yurippe, I totally forgot you had a bento shop! I lost the inner lid to my Hakoya goldfish bento today. Can I buy a replacement (just that lid) from you?

Oh, never mind - I found it shortly after I originally posted this.

I have six boxes at the moment. I want many more, particularly all the Totoro boxes, but I have to convince myself that I need them first. My husband and I both work from home and our 2 year old stays at home too...so the only time I get to Bento is when we're going out on the weekends.

I keep thinking that if I had more boxes I could use them for lunch everyday instead of just keeping a few for special ocassions. Food is so much more fun and happy and mood-lifting in bento boxes!

And I think that I just convinced myself, lol :) :) :)

I've gotten a couple of compliments on my latest (Monokuro Boo) bento. Lately I've taken to warning people against "getting sucked in like I did" :)

Nicoteena, I LOVE your blue Bistro 365 bento. Where did you get it?!?!?!?
simple apparatus [deleted] 15 years ago
I have...5 bento, a Mr Bento, and a Laptop Lunch. I went to Mitsuwa Marketplace on Saturday and got the 5th one and that's the one I mostly use now. It's one tier and has a movable divider, then I took a divider from another one and put it in so I can divide my fruits and veggies.
lalalady 15 years ago
I have about 12 but I am always looking for more to add to the collection ! =D
tigerbelly 15 years ago
I have seven thus far. :) I'll be taking pics soon for the bento collection pool.

-totoro rectangular bento
-totoro soup bowl bento
-mashi maro round aluminum bento
-monokuro boo bento
-clickety click blue bear rectangular bento
-antique lacquerware bento
-mr. bento

The main barriers to further bento acquisition are my tiny nyc kitchen & my husband's *extreme annoyance* with the extra clutter of various bentos in the cupboards. :)
