[Updated August 19 with Archiving Old Content] Rollout of New Flickr Notifications Center and Settings

Flickr Staff

Leticia Roncero says:

================

We’ve created a new thread so that we can continue the conversation, help folks onboard to the new notifications experience, and to address any questions that may arise.

For those that mentioned issues impacting the Recent Activity page, please read this update.

================

This thread is a continuation of our original post here.

================

Today we’ve begun rolling out the new Flickr Notifications Center and Notifications Settings pages, which will simplify how you engage with other members of the community. We have included an FAQ in our Help Center, but we also wanted to share information and get your feedback here.

We’re expanding the current notifications from the bell icon at the top of Flickr and introducing a new tab for groups you admin. We’re also introducing a new Notifications Center page so you can see your notifications with more screen real estate.

The Notifications Center
The Notifications Center represents the first step to rebuilding the Recent Activity page to function more like modern notification centers. As such, there are a couple of significant changes in the way we’re presenting data in the new design that you’ll experience. To access the Notifications Center, click on the bell icon in the navigation bar at the top of Flickr, and at the bottom of the dropdown, you’ll see the link that used to read “View Recent Activity” now reads “View all notifications.” When you click that, you’ll be taken to the new Notifications Center.

Notifications Settings Page
The new Notifications Settings page, allows you to turn on or mute notifications by type.This page gives you complete control over your in-site notifications as well as email notifications to decide what you’re notified about, how you’re notified, and even how often. To access the Notifications Settings page, click on the bell icon in the navigation bar at the top of Flickr and you’ll notice a new gear icon that will take you to the Notifications Settings page.

You can now control the following web and email notifications:

Web Notifications
- Comments on your photos
- Comments on photos you’ve commented on
- Faves
- Followers
- Galleries
- Groups (you can manage notifications for each of your groups from here)
- Group invitations
- Messages (FlickrMail)
- Notes
- Tags
- Testimonials

Emails we send you
- Activity on you or your photos (Off/Immediately/Once per day/Once per week)
- Group Invitations
- Messages (FlickrMail)
- New followers
- Recent uploads from people you follow (Off/Immediately/Once per day/Once per week)

Group Admins
For groups, we’ve added new notification types to let you know when admins update the group admin blast, as well as group description and rules. Additionally, group admins will now see notifications for the groups they admin as a separate tab so they can easily sort out the priority updates for their groups from personal notifications and from groups they don’t admin.

Please explore these new features and share your thoughts with us here.

* How are you planning on using the new features and how will they be beneficial to you and your activity on Flickr?
* Are you finding everything easy to use or do you have suggestions for improvements?
* As you start using the new Notifications Center, we'd love to hear how it keeps you in the loop with the people you follow and the groups that you're part of. Or, is there activity you feel like you're still missing?

We'll be slowly rolling out the feature to a small percentage of the community, then ramping up throughout the week as we monitor and feel good about the progress.

We really appreciate your time and feedback!

Thanks,

===============

Edits:

March 2, 2021: Staff response to feedback about the option to turn on or off notifications for all groups at once and additional follow-ups.

===============
March 3, 2021:

New ‘Options’ in your Groups page
As we are rolling out the new Notifications, you’ll also see updates to your Groups list page, where all of your groups are displayed. We’ve changed the name of “Faved Groups” to “Pinned Groups” to avoid conflating with the action of faveing photos/videos. Pinning a group will keep that group at the top of your list. There’s also a new column called Options, which lets you manage group notifications, show or hide groups from your activity feed, and more. If you desire, you can use the Options column on the Groups list page to mute/unmute each of your groups.

Group Discussion Notifications
Now, all group members will receive notifications for new group discussions. These notifications were previously only available to group admins and moderators. We hope this keeps you in the loop on more group discussions!

===============
March 11, 2021: Staff response to feedback about group notifications, mention notifications, pinned groups, and new ways to mute all notifications from a group.

===============
March 31, 2021: Staff update on managing comments and persististing notification filters in Notifications.

===============
April 15, 2021: Staff update on the increased size of the Notifications Center page.

===============
August 19, 2021: Notifications updates with archiving old content + changes to the Recent Activity page.

I think I don't really care. I don't mean to be cavalier, but I get email notifications, and the bell is lit when anything happens. I also get notifications on my android Flickr app. If you'd like to do something that would absolutely thrill me, give us the opportunity to change fonts in email and comments! I have been asking for bold and italics - that's all - for four years, and have heard nothing.

I'd like to see that in the same way that gmail and comcast and outlook and pretty much all other email and text programs provide. The menu should be at the bottom of the comments and email boxes.

bold can be achieved by typing ( I will put speces inbetween otherwise it will just do it bold and in italics and you won't know what I'm on about _

italics . . . . < then i then >

bold . . . < then b then >

hope this helps :)

A mixed update, mostly positive but I just don't have time to go through and change all the notification for groups to off. I literally have hundreds of groups and don't want to know that they have just changed their blurb, or someone has started a thread that I have no interest in. Great work on the rest of the updates though! Thanks!

This is a nice upgrade, and if this has been mentioned or has been addressed, please forgive my redundancy. But for me it would be helpful if I could single out "rejections" above all else. Or give them a different color or marked differently in some way. I am a member of hundreds of groups, and I have thousands of photos here on Flickr. I'm very thankful for any positive feedback, such as someone favoriting one of my photos, or approving when I try to add to their group, but I'd love to know when a photo is rejected. That's what I want to see the most, since I know better what the group admin is NOT looking for, and I'll try to not re-submit that photo or photo's like it. Other than that I like this innovation. Nice job.

its really poor actually.
I am not that interested in all the happenings in groups I might be a member of. I just want to see if there are any comments on my images so I can reply. It doesn't do that so not use to me....

As many others have said: terrible downgrade, a stream of data which just obscures the simple, clear, and graphically clean and useful "Recent activity". I've always loved (and took for granted) this page (recent activity) as it told me exactly what I want to know, with an easy reference thumbnail and not just a long cluttered list.

It was not broke, so why join in the Facebook/Google game of "improving" good features by ruining the good in favor of the "new"? Sorry...

I too will be very upset if that page is no longer available as-is, because honestly, other than looking at streams and posts of contacts, it's my most-visited Flickr page, as I'm not planted 24/7 at flickr, and have counted on it over many years to give me useful info, as the "recent activity" page does, beautifully and concisely.

Please leave the page and don't "fix" other great features so they become terrible to many, useless to most, and cool for maybe some. Yuk.

in my opinion, any activity notification from a group to a member should be opt-in by the member. for example, and as i said, i'm not interested in knowing when someone starts a new discussion thread in a group or responds to a thread that does not interest or involve me.

this specific change in the notifications feature seems particularly noisy.

Please change the notification settings for groups. As someone else mentioned, at the very least make the group discussions an OPT IN. The only real benefit from this has been the ability to see what groups reject photos and the option to leave directly from the notifications if you would like to.

You guys could have done a better job. A simple colour coat is insulting.

What we need to see at a glance is a different colour for each type of notification. Different colours for Invites, Favs, Comments, Mails, etc.

Please also don't group notifications on favs, because it makes it difficult to see individual images that were faved.

I look forward to some meaningful updates to activity in the notifications dropdown.

Details on photo activity;

Recent Activity list has all activity on each photo; faves, comments, etc

New system has only last person. Means to see if activity is from friends must go to pic page, click faves, go to bottom, click to see if friend. If more than one, do all over again.

Not good. Ten times more work vs current 'recent activity view.

PLease fix this@

Changing the default behavior of critical feature like notifications is a poor choice. Instead of allowing users to opt into a feature you've basically enrolled everyone into it. Notifying everyone of a new topic being posted in the forums is plain stupid. The normal expectation in forums is to able to subscribe to specific topics and opt into being notified when there is a new message. .

Thanks for that I have been keeping on top of this particular issue. My concerns however go beyond this one issue to wonder why Flickr feels that it can upload a major change wiithout any reference to their customer base, which I assume they wish to maintain and expand. If in fact this is what they desire then what they have just done is no way to achieve this. They are just another company offering a product and need to show more concern and empathy for their customers before enacting such major changes. The probelm remains, what is next?.

I have noticed that notifications of new topics in groups seems to be "ramping up" over a period of recent days. Is this by design, or a bug, or perhaps the result of some bug being fixed/addressed?

To give an example: Today on my Bell menu I got a notification of a new topic in a group (Flickr API, FWIW). It's the first time I've had a notification from that group on my Bell menu since the rollout of these changes. But upon going to that group, I can see that there are three topics that have been newly created within the past few days. Why did I not get notifications about the others?

The same thing has happened with several (at least 3 or 4) other groups over the past week.

Note: TBH, it's possible (but unlikely) that I just missed seeing the other two new-topic notifications from that group. But one of the other groups for which this has happened is Photography Critique, which is kinda like a fire hose of new topics. There is NO WAY AT ALL that I could have failed to notice these notifications before they started happening a couple of days ago.

I only want to know information about my photographs, and maybe be able to turn on some of the other stuff, should I find a need at some point in the future.

Also, the need to change notification settings for each individual group is ridiculous.

Groups are just dust collectors a bit like with all the people i see on TV zoom interviews that have rooms full of 1000s of books in the background. Once those books are put on the bookshelf they remain there undisturbed for years collecting dust. The odd book might come out once in a while, but the the vast majority never see the light of day. Groups are just like that.

Personally i only have a small number of groups, but i only ever go to about two of them. The others i rarely visit. In recent months though I've been off air.

As other people have already mentioned, a button that could turn On/Off the notifications for all groups at ones would be much appreciated.
Moreover, the group notifications options could be offered in a different way, by proposing what type of group notifications are desirable for each user (for all groups and not for each individual group). For example i would be interested in a changes to rules of a group but not the rest. This seams more simple.
Thank you for your hard work :)

Hi,
Will flickr continue to support the Recent Activity page under the "You" pull-down menu? I much prefer this format. Thanks!

I asked before to have topics that were started in my groups and that were afterwards deleted by me removed from the bell icon listing (or at least faded out).

Luckily that was fixed within a day after my request.
Alas, since today that behaviour is back

NB: Older deleted topics remain gone.

This seems now fixed again, thanks.

I really prefer the old version. Things are too spread out in the new version, and it really does not provide useful information in a convenient format like the older version. Please keep the older version as an option that we can maintain.

Thank you.

In the past couple of weeks I've been repeatedly seeing the "Learn more" blue banner on top of my Bell menu, even though I dismiss it with the little 'X' every time. I haven't really taken note of how often, but it seems often enough to have been almost daily-ish.

It's not every time I visit -- I visit Flickr many times per day.

I don't clear my cookies or anything, so it's not that.

Is this a known issue? Are others seeing it? Flickr crew, is it on your radar?

Too much information in the new notification center. Don't need to know every time an admin makes an update, but can't shut them off. Please don't get rid of the old Recent Activity. I guess I don't care for "modern" notifications.

Another point probably Flickr is not able to count above 49.Notifications always informing that "....... and +49 people faved your photo" even 120 people faved your photo.

I don't want to be notified every time an admin does something to a group or someone creates a topic, but I can't find a way to turn those new features off. I was happy with the old system. The new features are just annoying and of no interest to me.

The 'Groups you administer' section is a great feature! I'm using it on Desktop PC with Mozilla Firefox.

Now I can see all groups activities when they happen without the hassle of clicking through My Groups, then approval queue then down down to end of the list and back to the next group I administer.
This is a very good development and I hope there is more coming of this.
For example, I'd like to give some users and/or moderators the permission to invite photos to the groups without these UGLY invite codes. This would help revitalize groups!

I see this conversation veering into more of a discussion about the nature of groups rather than notifications themselves -- just a friendly reminder to keep the conversation focused. Thanks!

Too many irrelevant notifications - XX has created a topic in group YY - nobody cares. And you think it's a good thing to make us go through every single group to turn this off manually group by group? Bad call. It's not a good thing. It's a PITA.

Soooo much spam. I don't care that someone "created the topic X in group Y" or "updated the admin blast", whatever that is.

I see I can disable notifications for specific groups, but what does that mean? Is it just these weird notifications or something I might care about (e.g. my photo was accepted or rejected by a moderator).

I do care about moderation and changes to group rules, I don't care about new topics or "blasts", how can I set this up?

I don't have it yet.. but PLEASE leave the You ---> Recent Activity Page alone, it is my booked marked landing page.

And as I have a very slow internet conection, I fear with all these new changes, I will be unable to load pages again like back in 2013.

I'm a "minimal notifications" guy. I want to be able to turn off most notifications (and have.) The glaring flaw from that POV in the current UI is for groups. I basically want:

- group notifications off generally
- notifications on in groups I manage
- (optionally) notifications when responses happen in threads I've contributed to, unless I turn them off

It's that first item that's tough right now: I can't just turn all of them off, I have to go through the list and click every one, and remember to do that for any group I might join.

The ONLY thing I dislike are the relentless notices of of everyone thanking a group for getting a group cover. I DO like the "rejection" notices because now I know which groups my pix may not be frequently represented in and can leave those groups. Thanks Flickr. And if anyone can tell me how to turn off the group thank you notices I would be eternally grateful.

Hola, muy buena iniciativa, saber cuando te rechazan una fotografía.
Pero es demasiada información, notificar lo que modifica cada grupo.

The vast majority of my 83 notifications I viewed today were updates about new topics created in groups I am a part in. There is no way to turn these off without manually turning off notifications for ALL groups I am in. I am a part of 1000+ groups and this would take quite some time. This would be very annoying to have to do, as I do not care to be notified about new topics in groups, and I am hardly the only one.

As others have said, it would be very helpful to be able to turn notifications on/off with one setting to cover all the groups you belong to. It clearly isn't practical to manage these one by one if you belong to 100s of groups. Thanks.
