This almost never happens. A few likely scenarios:

1. The photos were removed because your flickr account is synced to a third party program like "Lightroom", and the third party app has delete priviledge, and you made changes to the third party app. Check here:
www.flickr.com/account/sharing

2. The photo are private and you are viewing your stream as public (check upper left of your main photostream page).

3.Occasionally albums seem to disappear from view (sometimes temporarily) but the photos will still be found in your main photostream.

I think your best course of action is to report your concern here:
help.flickr.com/contact
only flickr staff can say if, why or when they would have removed this many images.

I can see a figure of 18,316. Is it possible that you have changed your viewing context from "View All" to something else - this would likely affect your image count - my count does change.

That's what it said when they first posted, I touched on this when I mentioned "public" (my second scenario). It is still possible that the setting is other than "view all". I thought about the way I approached it after my post but I didn't change it, wanting to see "view all" upper left was the better way to say it for sure ;-)

No, I think your explanation was worded much better. I hope we learn the outcome.

where do I seethis to change what I view in either desktop broswer or app

I don't remember changing any settings to that effect.........

email from flickr
I took a look & do see that a 4038 photos have been deleted from your account. I also want to highlight the dates of these deletions dates back to 12 January 2015.
In the meantime, I've escalated this situation to see what we can do by way of restoring your images since it's clear deleting these pictures from Flickr entirely wasn't intentional.

Keep in mind that while we cannot guarantee the restoration will be successful, I'll report back with updates as they arise.

Pretty sure I didnt delete any albums
hard to know what is missing, i can see at least 2 or 3 missing
I looked to see what 3rd partys has access, and didnt reconise 3, so revoked those 3
