Help with Pro Act Settings

judicious credit says:

Hello everyone. There are three main settings for privacy in my Pro Act. I have the bottom 2 enabled / ticked but am unclear on what checking off the top one will do. Can anyone please tell me what would happen if I clicked the top one also?

Thank you very much

Can you tell us what the wording is for the setting you are unsure about?

John Frattura:
Thank you, sure, these are the settings...

Your photos
1) Hide your photos from site-wide searches on flickr.com?
2) Hide your photos from searches on 3rd party sites that use the API, including Yahoo! Image Search?

Your profile
3) Hide me from site-wide searches on flickr.com and on 3rd party sites that use the API?

I have 2 and 3 activated and am not sure what 1 will do. I don't want to hide all of my images on flickr but hiding my username would be handy just from a stalking perspective.

Hiding your images from site-wide searches on flickr.com simply means that your images won't show up when people search flickr for words or tags.

I was afraid of that. I guess there is nothing more I can do then to deter people from stalking me. I have had over 1000 views in 3 hours :(

Thank you for the help

Having a lot of views in 3 hours doesn't mean anyone is stalking you. Your images are public. Anyone on planet earth with an internet connection can view them. I did.

Although stats aren't perfect, maybe you can examine yours, to get an idea of where those views came from.

Hi, I wish you were right. But I have been on Flickr for over 10 years and the only time I get views like this and lots of lewd searches in my stream which combined add up to actual sentences are when I am stalked. I have also had threats. Stats with numbers this high have only come from Explore for me and the tags being searched indicate someone has watched me for some time. This has happened to me a number of times unfortunately. I have deleted as many people as possible at the moment and also have Flickr helping out. I look at my stats daily and it would be nice to think people are all friendly on the net but they are just not. None of these views are coming from friends or friendly followers. But as you say anyone can be found, and once found it is something you have to deal with. Regardless I am not going to live in worry about this, I will just have to ignore it I suppose. Not easy to do

Thank you for the replies, I appreciate them.

lots of lewd searches in my stream
People (mostly guys) search for sexy words. It has always been that way. But not everyone that searches for words that happen to be listed in your photostream even know that you exist. They are just searching for certain words, and seeing what pops up. If one of your images happen to be in the search results, you get a "view" and are notified that someone searched for that word. That doesn't mean that they searched your photostream.

To use a rather tame example, let's say you had an image with the word "bikini" on the page. If I did a Flickr search for "bikini", and 100 images popped up including yours, you would get a view, and your stats would say someone searched for "bikini". But the other 99 people also get views, and stats that say search: bikini.

That's not indicative of stalking. I'm not trying to discredit your stalking theory, but a stalker wouldn't have to search the entire site for "lewd" words if they were trying to stalk you in particular. They would just bookmark your photostream, and go right to it. But I'm glad you're in touch with Flickr if you're concerned. They will help.

edit: Just my opinion: report any actual threats, but don't worry so much about Flickr searches. Again, just my opinion.

Yes I understand what you are saying. I have zero / pornographic for lack of a better description, words in my stream. I am not bothered by searches of sexy words here and there and innocent searches as well. ie...someone searches for cougar, I have cougar as a tag on mountain lion images. Someone searches for mature, I have the word mature as an animals tag. I change the tags that get me too many unwanted views but use tags in all ways...relating to color, texture, mood, season etc.and am very descriptive. Last week I had a "seed" hyperlink planted into a comment on an image of mine that was five years old. It was a fake invitation to a group that would interest me. I thankfully clicked on that with my phone because it was not an invite to a group but malware. And when left, it attracted followers to my stream by the minute. I have so far deleted almost 80 followers in the last 3 days. Every single image of mine is being looked at sometimes on a daily basis going back for ten years. Every image, ot here and there. I am getting incessant looking at the ones which may be able to identify a person. Old injuries I've had, apts, places I have been, what I may drive, where I may live. I am extremely careful with my images online but it is difficult to obtain perfection in safety. I have had to make private two other acts off of flickr due to this same activity. I have hardly posted any recent images and am in few groups. Nobody cares about every single image a person has going back ten years to look at the same ones every single day for weeks on end.

There is a lot more I could say, but I hope that will explain my situation a little better. It is not a theory, really. The last time it was done to me was a few years ago. I am reluctant to say more, but Flickr is doing what they can. I'll leave my comments now since I've done all I can aside from leaving Flickr which I am absolutely not going to do. I should probably not say more publicly now, thanks for your time.

[edited to remove specific means by which people can stalk others as the last thing I want to do is leave instructions for anyone].

Sorry for your well-stated plight. Don't know if it's possible or harmless, but have you considered changing the name/handle for your stream?

Maybe the idea is buried in your discussions, and I just missed it.

Hi, it would make me sad to do that but yes I've been thinking of it lately :( I just don't know if it would make any difference / change anything. What do you think?

Hey. I probably saw it while checking out the Help Forum for fun. I'm curious about most of the contributors these days, but your handle struck me a certain way, and I was surprised to see what was in your stream. I expected a bunch of rabbits or something sexual, sorry to say. Instead, you entertain with lovely pictures of the great northwest.

I, too, am not sure it would matter. People find us in so many ways. Good luck.

albyn.davis:Thanks for the nice comment and insight into my username :) It's funny you just never think of such things at the time. When I joined Flickr my life was just 24/7 rabbits with my special needs pet. You make great points about my name sending some sort of sexual message and not representing my current stream. I will likely change it to at least something non bunny soon because of that. So it was very helpful. Nice talking to you.
