what is the point of collections?

danhotz says:

Flickr has the most obtuse, non-intuitive menu and navigation of any software I have ever used.
And I have been using computers since my very first Apple II c.
What is the point of collections vs albums?
Why is there no easy way to view, edit and move albums into and out of collections?
Can you tell that I'm frustrated??
Even the upload process is ambiguous as hell.

I use the Organizer for those tasks. (Albums and Collections tab)

Kinda the same as the "point" of having folders on your desktop, an innovation that came (to general availability) just a tiny bit later than the Apple IIc.

If you have hundreds of albums, it's helpful to categorize/organize them into boxes in various ways. See mine for an example, although tbh my Collections page is languishing a little bit, and the less-than-ideal UI is one contributing factor to that.

You can easily do this in the Organizer under the albums and collections tab:

www.flickr.com/photos/organize

You just drag the album you want to over into a collection you've created.

Organizing Albums and Collections

Collections are useful for when you want to group sets of albums together. People used to call them "sets of sets"

For example, I have a collection of photos I've taken of the 100 largest American cities. Or a collection of photos of all 50 United States. Or a collection of concert photos organized by band. When you have a lot of albums it helps you provide a bit more organization.

Unfortunately the Collections page loads VERY, VERY, VERY slow and it's pretty much buried in the Flickr UI, so they don't get the exposure that they should in my opinion. It's one of my favorite features on Flickr personally though and I wish Flickr did more to promote them.
