J'apprecie le lyrisme discret, la poesie froide qui affleurent souvent sous la rigueur helvetique et presque «psychorigide» des images de Alexis Gerard, sa haine du flou, de l'effet, de l'atmosphere facile. Merci a unstill pour son tres bon commentaire .

Taken over a remarkably vast area of the planet, it is fascinating to me that these pictures are never about the exoticism of a particular place or a tourist’s delight with discovering the “other”. The specifics of the location make almost no difference at all. Wherever in the world we find ourselves, it consistently appears to be a quiet and suspended world of familiar yet strange remains – one where most of the inhabitants have seemingly recently fled (or maybe have all gone out to lunch.) And in exploring these environments we consistently feel the same delight or pity - depending on your temperament – at the remains left behind by these absent hapless natives. Remains of a people who were only doing their best to put things in order and make a kind of sense, while the forces of time, nature, and conflicting narratives consistently make a mockery of their attempts. Everywhere that we are led, we find the architecture and interior design have been unwittingly cast in roles that they didn’t sign up for. The signage is frequently in a conspiracy with the topiary and the cultural artifacts must wrestle with each other for dominance. Alexis reveals the near constant tragi-comedy going on around us as one moment’s priorities are layered over another. Within this parade of mischievousness and tensions, Alexis strategically intersperses photographic captures of “Nature (with a capital N)”. A single cloud, a tangle of branches, ice floes, mountain ranges, bird’s eye views of landscapes. These images are seemingly Nature free from human intervention and constraints (even occasionally – and most effectively from my perspective – avoiding the photographer’s habit of symmetry and rule-of thirds.) In the main body of work, the natural world appears as something that was used against its will. Forlorn indoor plants, hedges bowing to the will of persistent gardeners or grand landscapes locked in cheap posters or billboards at the service of commerce, fashion, aestheticism - or as feeble attempts to break through the self-made prisons of indoor life under florescent lights. Maybe Alexis’ is using the traditionally romantic images of Nature to highlight an idea that the natural elements in the rest of the work are only submitting for the moment and confidently residing - without judgment or malice - as a kind of background music that will eventually rise and swell over this dance of signs and become the only remaining sound.Read less
