Connecting people to places across time.

Historic Environment Scotland is the lead public body established to investigate, care for and promote Scotland’s historic environment. We took up our full statutory role on 1st October 2015. We take on the responsibilities of Historic Scotland and RCAHMS, which has been managing and recording the historic environment for more than a century.

We collect, record and interpret information on the architectural, industrial, archaeological and maritime heritage of Scotland. We hold an archive of over 18 million items including photographs and albums from the 1840s to the present day, original architects’ drawings, excavation plans, new survey drawings, engravings, sketches, books, manuscripts and maps, offering a unique insight into the special nature of Scotland's places.

Our database Canmore contains images and information on over 300,000 archaeological and architectural sites across Scotland, and over 150,000 images are available to view online.

On our Flickr photostream we'll be posting some of our best archive images and you can see more on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
