The Trill is Gone...

Our little hummingbird friend, Don Juan, has left us for the year, to return south for the winter. This is my very favorite of all the pictures I took of him.

Of the hundreds of hummingbirds who called our yard home this summer, this particular hummingbird became almost a pet. He would visit us every evening, alighting on "his" branch in the aspen tree near our deck, riffling his feathers and swinging his head from side to side and flirting. This is my favorite picture of him.

We could always tell Don Juan apart from the other Broadtailed hummers. He had a very distinctive personality, and seemed almost as fascinated with us as we were of him. He would occasionally hover near our faces, check us out, then zip back to his branch and keep an eye on us while he flirted with the female hummers and challenged male rivals.

We're going to miss the sound of hummingbird wings trilling through the trees...

'Til next summer, Don Juan!
