In the 1950s and 1960s, Vancouver newspapers like the Vancouver Sun and The Province actively promoted the talents and personalities of their writers as added value to their publications. They would create advertisements highlighting their editorial talent and often published photographs of their newspaper staff to increase their celebrity profile. And the journalists themselves? They did their best to live up to the model of the broody and intrepid, yet slightly rebellious reporter.
