Alberta Department of Public Health Posters
The Alberta Department of Public Health was founded in 1919 and was responsible for the planning, administration and maintenance of all aspects of public, mental and environmental health in Alberta. At the time that the Department was first created, its activities included providing financial support to hospitals, overseeing creation of hospital districts, control and monitoring of infectious diseases, public education programs in support of disease prevention, approval of plans and specifications for the development of municipal and industrial waterworks, sewerage and sewage disposal projects, approval of plans and specifications for hospitals, inspection of sanitary services associated with institutions under the administration of the Department of Public Works, creation and supervision of the public health and district nursing program, and supervision of the Provincial Laboratory. The department was renamed the Department of Health in 1967 and was dissolved in 1971.
