Gastonia North Carolina
Gastonia is the largest city and county seat of Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 71,741 as of 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area, Gastonia has experienced steady growth, with a population increase between 2000 and 2010.
Many shutdowns and job losses have plagued Gastonia over the past decade. The city was the international corporate headquarters for textile company Parkdale Mills, the number one manufacturer of spun yarn in the world. The company also operated two production facilities in Gastonia and several in surrounding communities. Parkdale, like many other companies, has closed plants and moved production to other countries.
The population growth is from blowins like me who work in Charlotte and come from elsewhere. About 10,000 of Gastonia's population work in Gastonia so there's not a strong scense of commitment to the town from the majority. I would like to see that change and give Gastonia a new soul.
So here on flickr starting in Jan 2012 I will document it's new growth. I wish to see Gastonia rise like a Phoenix from the ashes.
