Tsourouniana cemetery excavation, Crete, 2019
Photos taken just N of Tsourouniana, W of Topolia, Kissamos, NW Crete on 30 June 2019 (35°25'40.4"N 23°40'42.4"E). I could not find any published information on the site, but the stone-lined cist graves are all aligned east-west and could perhaps be early Byzantine. Any human remains were presumably removed by the archaeologists. The road is being widened and rerouted as part of the Topolia bypass, and presumably the cemetery was discovered during this process. Google Earth historical imagery shows removal of olive trees from the site in 2017, followed by bulldozing and excavation in 2018.
