I have the Best Kids in the World

Mother's Day isn't a big deal in our house. Oh, I'd like it to be, but I also just like having a day that I can say "to hell with it" and have pizza for dinner. Maybe a nice card. Flowers wouldn't hurt. Whatevs.

But, I already got myself Mother's Day gifts- I bought a couple CDs (The Piano Guys, Say Anything) and THE HAT! My fancy ren faire hat. So, when my kids weren't around on Mother's Day, I wasn't too fussed. The Disabled Guy got me a ceramic frog fountain (there's a long story there, for some reason he thinks I love frogs. But hey, he tried).

I got a couple "Happy Mother's Day" texts with some humor attached from the kids. I didn't cook dinner. Everything was fine.

A week after Mother's Day was the Janesville Renaissance Faire. And, I work on Saturday (I do tarot card readings for a new age shop) and on Sunday, I play. Play and spend the money I made the day before.

I was scheduled to work from Noon to 6 PM and faire opened at 10 AM. So, I dropped my gear at the booth and went off in search of our friends who are cast members from Bristol. As I was speaking to the man who plays Captain Sir Martin Frobisher and the woman who plays Chastity Trollop (though she was a different character at Janesville- oh, and they're married in real life), the kids arrived. In fact, Frobisher saw them first.

They walked up (my daughter, Kat, Kat's boyfriend- Tyler, and my other daughter, Christine. My son didn't come, ren faires are for nerds) and Kat was filming me on her iPhone. Tyler was filming me on Christine's camera and I said, "I didn't think you guys would be here so early- Uh-oh, you're recording me for something!"

Christine said, "We wanted to give you t his for Mother's Day..." and she handed me the basket. I started crying.

Frobisher said, "Oh, Huzzah!" and his wife said: "I want that!" to him, pointing at the camera. The kids did this on purpose, so I'd be in public and the faire was the best place, because we were among friends.

But this is what my kids did for Mother's Day. They pooled their money and fixed me right up. And I get teary-eyed whenever I have to tell the story. I don't know how I got so lucky to have such wonderful kids.
